Wanderers Mini’s Blitz

On the morning of Sunday 10th March, I opened my curtains and got an uneasy feeling. It was raining heavily and the Wanderers U11s were scheduled to host DLSP and Old Wesley. I reached for my phone nervously, ready to message Jim and check if the pitch was playable. It has been a wet winter and another cancelled match would be really disappointing for the minis. Then it struck me, we’re on the 4G - game on!

The minis arrived at 09:45 to warm up and whilst there was mud and puddles all around, the pitch was a bastion of tranquillity, reminiscent of a perfect carpet in a stately home. During the warmups, I spoke to the opposition coaches who were glowing in their assessment of the new surface; maybe even jealous!

We played two matches against DLSP, generally regarded as one of the stronger teams at this grade. The first match was played at a fast pace with some great running rugby. Unfortunately, we lost a quality game 3 - 2. We won the second match comfortably, running in several tries and playing some great rugby. What was particularly impressive was the ability to play a wide-wide, passing and running game, on a day when the conditions were difficult and after a night of heavy rain; this was made possible by the perfect surface. Most importantly of all, was the excitement and pride of the minis for the new pitch. Smiles abounded across all teams as the kids enjoyed a great morning of rugby in our new arena.

Massive congratulations are due to all of those who had the vision and made it a reality. I hope many generations of Wanderers get as much enjoyment from this great amenity as this year’s U11s have to date.
