Fergus Slattery RIP
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Fergus Slattery. Fergus was made an honorary member of Wanderers FC in recognition of his great contribution and achievemnets in Irish and World rugby. He was very proud of the honour bestowed upon him by WFC and was a regular at annual dinners up until recent years until his health deteriorated. He captained the Wandererly Wagon Vets tag team between 20023 to 2007, and true to form took home the tournament winners medal in 2006.
His rugby career occupies a special place in Irish sporting history. Over the course of 61 appearances for Ireland, Fergus established himself as one of the country's finest players and captained the national side on several occasions. He was instrumental in Ireland’s Triple Crown successes in 1982 and 1985.
Fergus also left an indelible mark on the international game through his achievements with the British & Irish Lions. He played key roles on the historic tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, the latter standing among rugby’s most celebrated accomplishments. His 18 appearances for the Barbarians included the famous encounter against the All Blacks in Cardiff in 1973 where he scoed a try still remembered today.
Our condolences & sympathies go to his family, his beloved wife Margo, his daughter Nikki, his son Cameron, and his cherished grandchildren and his extended family and a wide circle of friends.
Rest in peace
